Wade's success at Alabama translated well to Duke's program. In late 1930, Wallace Wade shocked the college football world by leaving national powerhouse Alabama for Duke. In their first season competing as Duke University, Howard Jones took over in 1924 and led the Blue Devils to a 4–5 record before leaving for USC. Alexander took over the reins of the Trinity Blue Devils in 1923 and led the team to a 5–4 record. During the 1922 football season, Steiner coached the Trinity football team to a 7–2–1 record as the team outscored its opponents 156–57.
